An Experimental Study of the Effect of Peostaglandin E©ûon the Surivial of Random Pattern Skin Flaps in Rats

Abstract
The survival of skin flap is very important in the field of plastic surgery because, actually, most of the operation in plastic surgery deals with skin flap. For the.last few decades, many, clinical and experimental studies have been performed to increase the skin flap survival. Even though many experimental studies were reported, however, the results were conflicting.
This experimental study was planned to clarify the effects of Prostaglandin E, which was known to be the most potent vasodilator and platelet aggregation inhibitor. The followings are the results of our experiment.
1. In the control group, the mean survival rate was 60.9% of total skin flap surface area. 2. In the group I(PG E, administered 3 days preoperatively, immediate preoperativel and 3 days postoperatively), the survival rate was 84.7%.
3. In the group II (PG E, administered immediate preoperatively), the survival rate was 93.8%.
4. In the group III (PG E, administered immediate preoperatively and 3 days postoper;tively), the survival rate was 85.2%.
5. The differences of the skin flap survival rate between experimental groups were not significant.
6. It is suggested that PG E, act on distal part of the flap, because no vascular changes were noted at the proximal part of the flaps on histologic study.
